| 'Rapist' to marry his ladylove in prison |

A 24-year-old undertrial has agreed to marry a teenaged girl whom he was accused of raping and getting pregnant. He also accepted the fatherhood of a baby boy delivered by her about one-and-a-half years ago. The bapla (wedding in Santhali) between Padmini Murmu (16) and Khaira Hansda will take place on Monday at the 122-year-old Baripada Circle Jail where Khaira is lodged on charges of raping his wife-in-waiting. Senior superintendent of the jail Shibadas Chand confirmed that the marriage is on. All 686 jail inmates have been invited to the wedding dinner. "Dara Singh, convicted of murdering Christian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons, may also attend it," a source said. The all's-well-that-ends-well script has been written by an NGO, which persuaded Khaira to confess to fathering the child, who was born at the district government hospital on November 1, 2006. It was learnt that Khaira and Padmini, then a Class VII student in Adasila Nodal M E School, were in love, and occasionally, got physical. But when Padmini delivered the child, Khaira flatly denied having fathered him. It was then that Kuliana police registered a case of rape against Khaira. "The wedding is going to be a pure Santhali affair, with all its customs and rituals observed and followed," said Bijay Kumar Behera, secretary of Short-Stay Home for Women and Girls, run by a Mayurbhanj-based NGO called Rural Development Action Cell (RDA). " Bapla is an arranged marriage that takes places following negotiations between two families," he added. A 15-member barayatri , led by the bridegroom's brother, Kara, and as many kanyayatris , headed by the bride's father, Karunakara, will take part in the rituals. Majhi Haalam, the "headman", of Sunthipal and Adasila villages in Kuliana, will solemnise the marriage. Padmini, it was also learnt, will get a brand new sewing machine and Khaira Rs 5,000 as wedding gifts from Short-Stay Home for Women and Girls. "This is to help them rehabilitate themselves," said the NGO's secretary. |
